John Cale: He went to the airport with an empty suitcase? I didn’t know that. He must have been stewing for a long time.

Michael Bonner: On October 5, 1971, the Velvet Underground made their live debut in England. But who were these four musicians who plugged in at Leicester’s Palais de Danse? We recognize the thin, wiry singer-guitarist with a shock of curly brown hair as Doug Yule and the drummer is unmistakably Moe Tucker—but who are these other two guys, all flared denim and long hair? The Velvet Underground had always been a band in transition: in the four years since their debut, they had remade and remodeled themselves with each successive album. But what exactly was the plan now? The two other men on the Velvets’ 1971 UK tour were guitarist Willie Alexander and bassist Walter Powers—veterans of the same Boston music scene that had incubated Doug Yule. The trio first played together in 1967 in a band called the Grass Menagerie and had come together incrementally during 1971, with Powers first replacing Lou Reed at the start of the year and Alexander joining after Sterling Morrison’s departure in August. As the tour finished, Tucker, Alexander, and Powers returned to the States while Yule stayed behind at the behest of the band’s manager, Steve Sesnick. It transpired that Sesnick had struck a deal with Polydor’s UK arm for a new Velvets album. Ensconced in a studio in late 1971, Yule began work on Squeeze (which wouldn’t be released until 1973). Geographically, ideologically, and spiritually, the Velvet Underground were a long way away from home.
